Hi . My Harley stock pipes have various crap burnt onto them ( shoe rubber etc ) and nothing works?
I've tried "blue job " , acetone , oven cleaner , brake cleaner and scraping with the edge of an olfa blade with no luck - any suggestions ? Thanks .

We had he same problem with our 74 Sportster and nothing worked either. We just replaced the pipes, with stock pipes. It helps to have friends in the business.
0000 fine steel wool
000 fine works too.
You might need to warm the pipes up a bit to get it off there.
But it will come off.
Honda Chrome Polish
My buddy had the same problem on his 88 Dyna Lowrider. He picked up his girlfriend to go to a rally & she was wearing rubber sole shoes with about a 3-4 inch thick rubber heel. she unknowingly put her heel on the 2" drag pipes & burnt a hole in them to the bottom of the shoe. After we scraped the larger pieces of rubber off we warmed up the pipes, let them cool a little, sprayed a adhesive removing solvent on the patch of rubber & used fine fine steel wool to remove it. turned out great. Just wear gloves & use the steelwool carefully to avoid scratching the chrome
Oven cleaner works!
I've tried eveything over the years with very little success. I started putting chrome heat sheilds on all mine. They look good and keep things from melting on the pipes.
A Dremel Tool will polish it off using fine polish. Or paint them with high heat black.
Paint Remover will dissolve most any of that crap, but by now ( using a blade edge) your pipes are probably scratched.
The "sure fire" way to get chrome pipes clean is as follows:
Put paint remover on the ( tar, rubber , plastic etc.) let it sit a while.
Using a thumbnail or the edge of a credit card scrape off as much as you can .
Repeat that process as many times as is needed to get off the "crap"
Then depending on how much is left ,using chrome polish or Blue Job , Rub, Rub, Rub until that last is off.
It can take hours, it's a matter of how bad you want the stuff off.
I had a mechanic melt his nylon pant leg on a pipe ,took me like 3 hours.
use 000, or 0000 steel wool and wd-40. polishing compound will work with the steel wool too. this will also take a lot of little scratches out at the same time.
