I have a new Harley 1200N nightster and bought 6 years extended warantee for $1000.00?
I've just been told that I wasted my money because I voided the warantee by putting on vance&heins exhausts. The Harley people themselves put them on telling me how much better the bike would sound! Well, they were right there but what about my warantee? I get too many mixed messages on this subject.
No one seems to have answered your question about being ripped off… warranty not withstanding, let’s examine the "extended warranty". This is no more than a money making insurance policy for the factory… number one, they have your money earning interest for the one or two years that the FACTORY warranty is in place… after that, they then are relying on actuary tables determining two things…. 1) how long will you own the bike (stats say LESS than 6 years)… 2) what are the warranty issues between two to five years on a bike constantly maintained by the dealer (I’m sure service is mandated in the agreement). If they are ‘betting’ it’s not going to break down in five years if properly maintained, then why should you? I believe all extended warranties are rip offs IF you let the factory maintain the bike through the warranty period and then religiously maintain it yourself for as long as you own it. Keep your 1000 dollars for oil canges and filters every 2500 miles, tires and brake pads and routine maintainance at the dealer, and she’ll run forever.
i wouldn’t sweat it on mods…. sure, the warranty won’t cover jobber parts, but it should cover anything else. it’s all subjective, if a dealer won’t look after you, just goto another. dealers like new business. if it’s all just been done and just been purchased, then march back into your dealer and tell him to clarify it all right now, or cancel the warranty and give you your money back. trust me, they made profit on it and don’t like giving up profit. a dealer can push warranty through, they don’t have to tell hd about your mods.
as far as ripped off? no, not persay… but you didn’t get the value of $1000 bucks in my opinion…. i’d suggest ext warranty on something like a cadillac where you have a $2000 air conditioner, or a $1100 power window motor, but very few things cost big bucks on your new bike, and for the risk…. i’d have passed, but to each his own.
nice bike choice btw, i’m sure your v&h pipes sound great on there
According to the H-D corp. any modifcations not done at the factory render the motorcycle a V-twin and no longer a Harley Davidson. That includes dealer mods. Love the bike, Hate the Company. Never had a Harley that was still in production anyway. Shovelheads Forever!!!!!!!
It all depends on the dealership. If they put the pipes on they generally will honnor the warrenty. The dealer decides if the bike is still covered not harley. what I mean is if the dealer sends in a claim then harley will accept it. Best bet is go directly to the service manager of the dealership that did the work and ask him. The dealer I go to told me that as long as I have them do the work, adn I am consistant with them doing maintence, ect. they will work with me on any service warrenty issues,. basicky they will look in their comp to see what work they did, if that work caused the problem in question. even if not they would most likely send in a claim for me. but every dealer is different.
If it was done by HD Dont worry about it
By law they would have had to tell you
Google or research the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. It is federal law. Your pipes cant make the transmission go bad, therefore the dealer cant deny you warranty work on the tranny due to the pipes. i.e. there must be a direct relationship with the failed part, & the none stock part to deny the warranty. I would expect if you burned a valve that the warranty would be void for that, but otherwise you should be good to go. Know the law when you go in, and always stay calm when dealing with the service manager. I at my local dealer on a weekly basis, and have seen those that know the law get done what is right…others are not so lucky. Know your rights!!!
Hmmm Sticky question.Your going to get a lot of different answers to this one.Generally if the aftermarket parts were installed by the dealer, the dealer where you bought the bike will honor the warranty.Another dealer than where you bought the bike probably won’t.As soon as possible i’d contact the service manager where you bought your bike and ask him about that.If he says no they won’t then get a refund on the warranty. Also ask him what happens if your traveling and you need warranty service.
did the dealership where the exhaust was installed tell you this? probably not. most dealerships wont do anything that will void your warranty, and certainly not without making it VERY clear to the consumer. warranty work and modifications are big parts of a dealership’s profits. they aint gonna poop in their nest. knowhaddimean vern?
Certainly the first thing many people do is add some loud exhaust to the bikes! Dealerships get paid for warranty work, so as it was previously said they are not going to cut themselves short. HD Co. certainly will not warranty a part that is not Harley (i.e. your V&H pipes), but under certain circumstances the dealership that insyalled them might. Many of the performance upgrades are not considered "street legal" and fall into the perverbial "grey" area. Where I work, if you had some of that work done and have trouble we warranty what ever is needed. But that other shop might not. It seams that it is up to the dealerships as to whether or not they will do warranty work on your bike. An example of this might be a shop 10 miles away from where you purchased yours from and had lots of work done being spitefull since you did not get it from them! Every dealership I have ever been to has new bikes on the show room floor with aftermarket pipes on them along with Harley performance upgrades (your S.E. Race Tuner is not considered "street legal"[HD covering their butts]. Why would a dealership do that to a new bike, sell it to you and say you have X amount of years warranty if it was voided just by those pipes? Think about it… if it was void by the V&H pipes, then it would not be done to a new bike still owned by the store. The shop that did your work should honor any warranty trouble to your bike. Lets say your chrome starts peeling off your headlight… how are V&H pipes affecting that part of the motorcycle? Now say if you installed your pipes yourself and cross threaded the mounting studs, then they may be hesitant to cover that being as you caused that problem. I have seen that done, where a customer screwed up something up on the bike trying to do their own work with both the shop covering it and not covering in under warranty. There is some common sense involved… should a battery be covered under warranty if the bike sits in a garage and not ridden for a year? Or the fuel system because the gas has turned foul?
We had a customer who kept breaking drive belts on his Sportster (not purchased from our shop). We warrantied it three times for him (and he was a very rude individual). His bike had many many performance mods (including aftermarket exhausts). But after the 3rd time we saw him get on the main road and ride a wheelie a good block! Needless to say we stopped replacing his belts under warranty due to his riding style (the Service Manager might have continued to cover them, but eventually HD would have taken notice of one bike getting the same part warrantied).
As it was stated previously, chat with the Service Manager where your work was done and take note as to what is said and just mention your concern. It is heresay from someone who does not work for a dealership telling you you wasted your money.
A great thing about HD’s warranty is if you have $4K worth of HD accessories added to your bike when you purchased it, then those get added to your bike warranty! Who else can say that? I do not do of any other motorcycle manufacturer that offers that long of a warranty period (or one to their accys)!
Having a good relationship with your dealership helps alot too!
