Sounds like a wonderful plan, but it won’t work. I changed my pipes for both sound (don’t like the quiet pipes that came on my Deuce) and for the heat. I put Rush slip-ons on it. Much better sound, but heat was basically the same.
What did help the heat was getting the racing tuner set up on the bike. It’s still hotter than blue-blazes on really hot days, but it’s better. I also bought No More Fried Thighs (heat deflectors) from R.J. Originals. The kuryakyn pays to use his patent- and I like his better. See if you need the download from Harley that cuts the heat at idle. They’ll know what I’m talking about. I had to do this on my 07 but 08s may have them come that way straight from the factory.
Something about Rhinehardts. though. You can twist the baffles in them. This may make a difference in their sound. Sorry, not sure on that one. I do know that if I have to replace my pipes, that’s why my new pipes will be.
You’re on an AIR COOLED motorcycle with a huge engine, dude. Learn to live with the heat. If you can’t take it maybe you’re just not ready to be a biker….
I put Rush on my 08 FLHX, good sound and you don’t have to remap. As for the heat, they make a thing called XIEDs. It stands for extreme inline enhancement ( or enrichment ) device. Basically it’s a wide band 02 sensor. HDs have narrow band sensors. Check with Nightrider.com they go into it in more detail.
If you just do slip ons… take the header pipes to a ceramic coater (race car guys) and have the INSIDE coated. It will move a significant amount of the exhaust heat out to the muffler…improve performance a bit too. FYI… d&d has a 4" slip on that sounds a lot like glass packs.

Vance & Hines dresser ovals sound very good. As for the heat problem go read this http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/hd2007HD_heat_00.htm

Too loud? Really? Turn in your dude card - no such thing as "too loud" on a Harley.
