Rationalize this…if a Harley-Davidson is made in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with many, many foreign parts…?
and can still be referred to as "Made in America" then I'm thinking a Honda Gold Wing currently assembled in Marysville, Ohio from many, many foreign parts can also be called "American made"...right?
Right. Goldwings and VTX Hondas are made in Marysville, but don’t try to tell some HD enthusiast that.
And yes, they are recognized as MADE IN USA.
They are stopping production in a couple years
though, cars and other Honda stuff will continue to be made there.
Its Sunday Im taking a day off
ILL give you a smart a-s answer Tomorow For now the sun is shinning go ride what ever you have
Ya i think ur on 2 somthing.
Harley sukk’s just as bad as anything else now.
Bunch of sell-outs!
capitalist pigs jumping on the bandwagon!
grrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!
good question… I don’t think anything is "American Made" anymore, It should be more like "American Assembled"
yes both are made in America , Harley is the biggest sell out and rip off , but remember both models are sold in America so the American salesman makes the commission …..
They are still made in America. Yes, some individual parts or groups of parts may be made elsewhere and shipped to America, but the bike is made in America. They are sold here and abroad. Honda only makes the Goldwing here in America if I understand correctly, and if a Japanese person wants one then they’ll have to have it imported. . . imagine that.
yes both made in USA
harley only has 12 foreign parts.except for the brakes which are italian.12 parts that are from japan.i would take the harley any day.at least they are not like victory and say american when more thanhalf of the bike is made in japan.the harley is the most american you can buy.the harley is MADE here.not of many parts (like the wing) made in japan and put together.but the drivetrain for the wing is cast here.but go with the harley.the only harley that is not made here is the V-ROD.the engines are MADE in germany in porsche’s plant then shipped over.if you think the harley has many, many foreign parts then somebody lied to you.i own four of them.and two japs.would never go back to the japs.
the entire front end of a harley is made by showa which is owned by honda, the electrics are made in japan, the pistons are made in germany, the wheels are made in australia. if ya want a usa made harley do what I did and build yourself a panhead chopper!!!!!! many jap bikes are assembed here as are a bunch of jap cars. welcome to the global economy. If the entire H.D. was built here the damb thing would cost 50,000 bucks to buy one one. so they outsourse. you wanna blane somone blame the unions and the lazy american work force!!!!!
Very true, but you also have to think about what country (where the corporate headquarters are at) is getting the main money.
In the case of the Honda plant in Ohio, the money’s going to Japan, as it’s a Japanese company.
Starting next year Gold wings will be made in Japan not Ohio
Yup….same thing with Victory, Ford, GM, Chrysler…….
too bad robert b hasn’t got a clue. got a little victory envy do we??? he’s pissed that victory has more american made parts than his religious idol harley…
Follow the profits! Would you rather fatten some foriegn guys wallet or an Americans?
How about my 1985 Yamaha Virago 700? Made in Japan from 100% Japanese parts — but in the years since it was made, I’ve spent much more in labor costs (all done in the USA) for repairs, tune-ups, etc., than the original purchase price.
Buy what you like.
Harley’s are ( and always have been) designed and made in America.
Yes there are some foreign parts ,but that’s nothing new, the suspension and some electronics have been Japanese since the early 70’s. The design and the vast majority of the parts along with the name Harley Davidson are made in America.
Conversely Honda is designed and all their parts are made over seas, the company name and foundation is Japanese.
The Gold Wing is big and fragile with all the fairings and plastic so it is shipped in pieces and ""assembled in America"".
Bit of a difference if you were to ask me.
Call it what you want.
There’s a German/Japanese company that makes seals and gaskets for Ford, Chrysler, GM, Toyota….(more)….. and Harley Davidson. Right here in the States.
Good thing you said "currently".
Honda is pulling out. Their bikes will be made in Japan again.
Legally there is a difference in definition. It has to do with what they call "local content".
I think ultimately most people consider where the manufacturer is headquartered out of. If the profit goes to Japan, it gets considered a Japanese motorcycle. If the profit goes to US, it’s considered an American motorcycle. Even where the majority of shareholders are likely still doesn’t hold much weight with public perception. I don’t think anybody considered a Dodge to be a fine German car when benz owned it, and I’m sure their components come from all over the world. Where components get supplied by tender from has turned into a global thing and not focused on.
I’ve also read that Honda will be pulling out of manufacturing bikes on this side of the pond and going back to Japan, so there will be American jobs lost over it. Try your question in 2 years again and see what kind of response it gets.
