   if you haave a part like 63796-77a, this meaans that the oil filter has been upgraded once from when it came out in 1977. That is what the letters mean, upgrades and how many have been done to make it work better.

   They’re codes to tell the guy at the parts counter how much to overcharge you for "genuine" Harley-Davidson parts.

   Usually they are name codes.

   Typically alot of Harley parts are made in japan, so i’m sure its some sort of code
