what kind of pipes should i buy for my harley superglide custom?
I need the bike to be louder but not to loud. I had a 1200 custom back in 1997 and Screamin Eagles were on it. Sounded great!!! Now I talked to Southeast Harley and they said Screamin Eagle pipes have changed and are not as loud. What do I buy???
sounds to me your a man that’s proud of your harley, and you want the best pipes for it, you want pipes that sound good and pipes that are tuned for the proper back pressure of a harley engine, pipes that WILL give you an actual increase in performance, and pipes that will make your harley friends say "oooooo" and "aaaaaaa" in amazement!
note: before I give you the name of these pipes please note the other HD owners on yahoo answers are going to attack me, call me names.
but I assure you I am 100% correct about this.
The Best:
Caliber True Dual Exhaust System
or/
Bassani Covington
Well you can’t go wrong with Vance and Hines. The short shots look and sound good, they may be a little loud for your taste though.
D & D. Great sound and performance. They make these for all different kinds of bikes, but here’s the Harley page.

Can’t imagine a reason a bike would "need" to be louder. Perhaps you could enlighten us as to the circumstance that necessitates an increase in decibels to operate your motorcycle.
Like molitor i don’t see the need to make it louder for the express purpose of being loud.(therefore obnoxious) That said, the only reason to put pipes or slip-ons or anything else on the exhaust that would open it up a little would be to get the thing to run better than the EPA thinks it should.
The new model of s/e slip-ons have an improved baffle that can be removed and partially cut out (especially if you want to tune them to a set of cams). The D&D pipes are supposed to be pretuned to model specific orders. The D&D pipes are extremely high quality and the price reflects that. I like ‘em,… can’t afford ‘em but I like ‘em. I chose a set of the new model s/e and cut out around 35-40% to tune them to a set of #26 Andrews cams and the bike runs like a striped@$$ ape. No popping, no empty barrel gargle when letting off, nothing. Just a mellow throaty rumble. -works for me…

also there’s this: Do not give one ounce of credence to any poster whose avatar rhymes with smart, ’cause he’s NOT. He does not own or even ride a motorcycle. He knows absolutely nothing about any discipline of motorcycling. He jumps at any questions related to Harley Davidson in order to spew anti-Harley rhetoric, visceral hate, outrageous lies and highly exaggerated figures. He was kicked out ofa Harley Davidson dealer some time back for apparently throwng a fit in public about not having his credit approved for for a purchase of a Harley, so this is how he gets his revenge. He incessantly attacks Harley Davidson, and their riders and cannot seem to be able to control himself. He has shown signs of mental problems, has trouble distinguishing reality, and sometimes is delusional. He appears to have an IQ of around 70, although his behavior is of someone that is around 9 years of age.
In short: a harley troll.. the others will be along shortly…
To the VTD: You are exactly right and that IS something I did leave out; (duh…) If the exhaust change is dramatic enough and depending on whether or not its EFI, you (Mike) will have to change fuel management. Especially if you change the airbox (a good move by any definition)
My bike has a stage 1 ‘puter flash, and a s/e airbox and I made sure to read my spark plugs before I did any more cutting on those baffles. I must have had those things out 5 times. (I admit its a backwoods way of tuning) but a dyno is a long way off from here, and for me this bike is not a hot rod. It simply is a skosh off stock. Thanks(VTD) for including a valuable, and crucial piece of information for the asker I was derelict in omitting. I’m much obliged.
I’m going with the white bear dude and flipper on this. either way is a good move. bart is a little off like always. (a true dual for a super glide?) the bassani is everything they say it is but just not worth the expense. the d&d’s are higher than a cats back but worth it. I have a set of rush baloney cuts that almost are a dead ringer for screamin eagle and they work great.
hey doc: you are a valuable and trusted part of your community and certainly this one. this is me sticking out my hand to shake yours and say i over stepped my bounds. if you gotta flip me off thats your call; i got no interest in stepping on your toes. i think there’s room on here for the both of us, without going all dr phil on you, i hope you feel the same.
Look into a set of Supertrapp 2 into 1. They are a little spendy if you go with the stainless steel ones and they turn to a nice shade of gold after a year or so as they go through many heat cycles but they offer really great performance, tuneability, and you can adjust the noise level.
Mike you will find as many answers as posters, but if you stick with a name brand, but do not buy straight pipes, overly loud and performance robbing w/o cones in exhaust ports of the engine.
I personally had a set of Hookers on my Springer, long shots, turned for my specific application, stock cams but reworked carb, and they sounded goooood, I also ran a Hooker 2 into 1 for a couple of years. You can turn them to a degree and they sounded ok, not loud but noticeable, I really enjoyed their performance boost over the drags that came on the bike. But again, I will remind you that everyone has their own preference. Loud is fine unless your doing it to annoy people or set off car alarms, but I wanted to get more ponies outta my ride, the 2 to 1 did just that, the Straight shots , kept the performance and would rock your socks, But Vance and Hines, Bub, Sampson, White Bros all make some excellent pipes. To find out for yourself, go where there are riders gathered listen for the sound you are looking for, (loud, rough grumble, ground pounding, whatever you want, you will find it. Then go buy yourself a set of Hookers, you wont regret it.:)
Fortunately for you, your bro got your back and warned you about the CEO of B.A.R.T. industries, always had a sore spot for us Harley riders, not sure why, but all the same, a crack pot!

Look into the above link….S&S has one of the best performing set of slip-ons on the market.
What year is you bike? Injected? You CAN get away with just changing the exhaust without re-mapping the ECM for injected bikes, but if you add an air cleaner to it also, you HAVE to remap the ECM. If the bike is an ‘08 or earlier, I recommend the Screamin Eagle Super Tuner. If it is an ‘09, definitely goe with the new DynoJet Power Commander 5 with Wide Band Oxygen Sensors. Both the Super Tuner and the Power Commander can be generically mapped, but having it DYNO TUNED is the best way to go.
No Quarter……….No Worries
Hands out & hats off to you too.
