What will take the blueing off my exhaust pipes?
I've got a 1983 Harley Sportster, and the shop that screwed me blind had the carb so fouled up my pipes are blue. What will restore them?

Nothing….!
Now, you have the choice of new pipes = expensive..
Re-chrome = semi expensive and no guarantee they will stay chrome, in fact, 1st trip out and I bet they will discolor.. Old world way was to pour thick oil into the pipe from the exhaust side. All this really did was smoke up the neighborhood. The concept was to coat the inside of the pipe with a layer of thick soot. It never worked because a long run would burn it out.
My ideas..
1 - Sand them down and wrap them in fiberglass (asbestos) tape, giving them the real out law look.
2 - High temp engine paint and paint them black or white. Depending on the color of your bike other hi-temp colors "could" be used.
3 - A new set of pipes from any number of expensive places…

New pipes — It’s a common problem. You could also have them rechromed.
Hello, they make a product called Blu Away. I’ve never tried it, but they say it works. You could also just buy some heat shields to cover your pipes. They make universal heat shields that you just clamp on. It would be hid that way and you would never have to worry about it again!
Good Luck! Jack
there’s this stuff called ‘blue job’ that is supposed to work on that I never used it.. give it a try.
To get rid of blue you need to buy new. Just the way it is. I seriously doubt anyone will re-chrome used exhaust pipes. I know I don’t want that filthy carbon inside the pipes fowling my plating tank chemicals and neither will anyone else.
Leave it alone, it adds character. If you want a cheap fix, I can’t imagine it would be hard to find a set of factory pipes for a Harley. Most of them don’t stay on long enough for the bike to leave the showroom anyhow…..
Unfortunately…there is really notheing that can be done, except buy new pipes. Even then, there is always a chance THEY will blue also, it’s almost guaranteed that they will, sometimes it just takes longer for some pipes than others. The blueing is actually comes from impurities in the chrome. The carb adjusted too lean and/or improper timing can cause blueing to happen almost instantly. There are really only two things you can do….heat shields or header wrap. Personally, I like header wrap….not only does it give it that "racey" look, it helps your performance by retaining the heat inside the pipe, creating a higher exhaust gas velocity which creates more torque.
I have been working on bikes for about 20 years and have since this first hand 10’s of dozens of times.
Nothing will fix it, it has to due with the heating and cooking of the metal first and foremost. The products everyone mentioned can not get it out because the bluing is all the way through the pipe, therefor you can not polish it off. I would leave it shows you actually used the thing.
